Simple text files have different formats on Unix systems and Windows systems. The formats differ in how ends of lines are represented. It is always safest to use to use files that are formatted for the system on which you are running software. Cygwin has utilities for converting files back and forth between DOS/Windows format and Unix format. Windows files can be converted before transferring them to a Unix machine, and Unix files can be converted after they have been transferred to the Windows machine.
