Installing X and Cygwin packages from CD
Cygwin packages can be installed onto your computer
from the CD. Be aware that the Cygwin packages will not be identical to an
install of Cygwin from http://www.cygwin.com,
although they are currently compatible with an install from Cygwin and
can be updated from Cygwin using the Cygwin installer.
- The install requires about 180 MB of disk space, but will consume more
space on disks with large block sizes.
- The installed X server can be operated in a fashion that is similar
to the operation of the CD.
- An "X Server" shortcut will be placed on the desktop and/or
in the start menu and can be used to launch the X server.
- When the X server is started, a single X terminal window will
appear.
- When the X server is started, an "New X term" shortcut will be
placed on the desktop. The shortcut will be removed
when the X server shuts down.
- The installed software is currently compatible with an install of
Cygwin from
http://www.cygwin.com/.
- Packages can be added, updated or removed by going to http://www.cygwin.com/ and
clicking on one of the "Install or update now!" links.
- The installed software differs slightly from an install
from www.cygwin.com to provide the same behavior as the CD.
- After installation, modifications are described in
/livecd/install/mods.html within the Cygwin file system space.
They are also available on the live CD in
/livecd/install/mods.html.
- Future changes to Cygwin and the Cygwin
port of the X server may be incompatible with the modifications
that have been made, and upgrading may cause
the "X Server" shortcut or the "New X term" shortcuts to
fail.
- Why not just install Cygwin from
http://www.cygwin.com/? You can.
- When installing, select packages that are included on the CD
that are not part of the default Cygwin install.
- After starting a Cygwin bash shell, start the X server
by running /usr/X11R6/bin/startxwin.sh.
- After starting the X server, start the copy/paste facility
by running /usr/X11R6/bin/xwinclip & in an xterm.
- Use the -X option to ssh to enable X window forwarding or
enable it by default in /etc/ssh_config.
- Cygwin packages can be installed from the CD through the wizard that
is normally used to launch X from the CD or by using the file
system browser to move to the /livecd/install directory on
the CD and double-clicking on install.bat.
